About RMCS
Rocky Mountain Chinese School (RMCS) is a small non-profit educational institution whose mission is teaching and sharing the Mandarin language and cultural traditions of the Chinese-speaking world. Since 1985, we have educated more than a thousand children and adults in the Denver/Boulder area.
•For children who are new to Mandarin, there is a track for Chinese as Second Language (CSL).
•Due to resource constraints, there is no longer a separate accelerated track for students who already speak Mandarin at home.
•Our adult classes teach conversational skills for business and travel.
•Most years, we also offer a summer camp for children ages 4-13.
RMCS classes are held at Superior, Colorado. Classes are held on Sunday afternoons between 1:00 – 5:00 pm. Classes are in session September – December (Fall) and January – May (Spring). For each session, language classes run for 12 weeks.
For more information or to schedule a visit, email us or phone (303) 543-8828.
These classes are designed for children and adults who are new to Mandarin. We develop student language skills in the following order:
1.Comprehension of spoken Mandarin
2.Usage (idioms)
3.Reading
4.Writing
Our teaching approach is based on the most current research for early language learning conducted by CLASS (Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools), NNELL (National Network for Early Language Learning), and ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages).
Class: Adult Language Class
We teach Adult Conversation 1 and 2. These classes focus on conversational Mandarin for travel and business.
Class: Level 1-4
Teaches speaking, reading, and writing.
Instructors teach in Mandarin whenever practical, resorting to English as necessary. Parents are encouraged to attend class along with their children so they are better equipped to practice Mandarin at home. (Of course, we request that they remain quietly in the background and refrain from disrupting classroom activities.)
All class levels introduce students to elements of Chinese culture (songs, festivals, literature, games, etc.) that are prevalent throughout the Chinese-speaking world.
Students usually spend multiple sessions at the same class level and move on only after instructor recommendation. When students successfully complete the "A" track, they will be prepared to take the College Board's Advanced Placement exam for Chinese. They will also know enough Mandarin to study, travel, and work in a Chinese-speaking country.
